Share Mobile Broadband

Special wireless routers are available for 3G Internet.

Mobile broadband is Internet access delivered from the same towers that mobile phones use to access the Internet and make phone calls. Mobile Internet can be accessed via a modem sold by a mobile-phone provider that is programmed for a specific phone number. Just like wired Internet, mobile broadband can be shared over a wireless network for multiple users to access.

Instructions

1. Purchase a wireless router designed specifically for your type of 3G modem. These wireless routers look identical to normal wireless routers, but they have either USB slots, an ExpressCard slot or a PCMCIA slot on the back. Combination routers are also available. These routers have both a 3G modem port and Ethernet ports. Any wireless router designed for mobile broadband will work for any 3G modem irrespective of the provider. You should consider the wireless range you require before purchasing a router. Mobile broadband routers can be purchased online and at brick-and-motor retail shops. In 2010, the price range for a mobile broadband WiFi router was $50 to $300.

Smart phone users with a mobile broadband subscription may be able to use a software application to transmit 3G Internet to other computers and mobile devices. The software and its availability will vary based on the smart phone, the provider's data plan and the user's contract.

2. Place the mobile broadband wireless router in a central location in the building where you want to use it. Avoid placing it behind walls, within cabinets or near large metal items, as they may interfere with the router's wireless range. Note that each router has a different range; check the packaging of a router for its exact wireless capabilities.

3. Plug your mobile broadband modem into either the USB port, Express card or PCMCIA slot on the back of the device.

4. Turn the wireless router on by either pressing the power button or sliding the power switch to the "On" position.

5. Confirm that the wireless router is working with a computer or mobile wireless device. For a laptop or desktop computer, click on the network icon in the Windows desktop menu on the bottom right-hand side, then scroll through the list of available wireless networks until you see your 3G broadband connection.
