It may be called a laptop, but the fact is that your lap is probably one of the worst places you can put your computer. Apple now warns in their computer manuals that leaving a laptop in contact with your body for extended periods of time can lead to discomfort or burns. If you block the exhaust on the bottom of a laptop, you can not only burn yourself, but also burn out your computer.
Instructions
1. Get a flat, sturdy, lightweight surface that is slightly larger than your laptop. This surface must also fit comfortably on your lap. Some products on the market are made specifically for this purpose, such as the Podium Coolpad, the Targus Chillmat and the MacMice iBreeze Laptop Cooling Stand, which use fans to help promote cooling. However, as long as your laptop's exhaust system is working well, all you really need is something to separate your body from the bottom of your laptop, while still promoting air flow through its exhaust system. Try a cutting board, a plastic cafeteria tray, a piece of scrap wood or a food serving tray designed for breakfast in bed.
2. Adjust and prepare your laptop surface if necessary. If you are using a store-bought product, follow the manufacturer's instructions. If you are using a wood board, make sure it is sanded smoothly to avoid splinters. Hot-glue a thick layer of cotton batting or carpet remnants (carpet fiber side down) onto the bottom of the board to give more insulation against heat and help prevent the surface from slipping off your lap.
3. Place your surface on your lap. Set your laptop on top of it. Your laptop should be slightly elevated on its footpads to promote air flow and the exhaust system should be functioning properly. If the heat is still radiating through your surface and warming your lap, fold a towel and place it on your lap, under your surface.
