A computer and stereo might be able to connect with just a male-to-male 3.5mm cable.
Connecting a computer's audio output to a stereo to play music is a straightforward process. You can connect any computer with an audio output jack to a stereo with little configuration. The process can be as simple as plugging a cable into two jacks on the devices. However, the stereo and computer may need to be configured to output the correct channels and for correct volume to keep the audio feed from distorting on the speakers.

1. You may need to get a 3.5mm to RCA adapter like this one.
Determine the connector types on both devices. Computers almost always use a 3.5mm jack to output audio, while stereos often use an RCA (red and white cable). You can use an adapter that converts the computer's connection type to the stereo's connection type.
However, the devices could share a common connection type. If the devices share a common type, use that type. If not, you should use a converter. You will likely need to get a 3.5mm male to RCA male adapter.
2. A 3.5mm male to RCA female adapter will recquire RCA male to male cables to connect to the stereo.
Connect the computer to the stereo. Use the different cables and adapters to connect the computer's 3.5mm speaker jack to the stereo's audio input. The computer's speaker jack is usually a light green color while the stereo's RCA jacks are red and white.
3. Turn on the stereo and select the input source you plugged the cable into if the stereo supports multiple audio sources.
4. Turn on the music on the computer.
5. Adjust the volume settings on the stereo and computer. As a rule, try to have the volume set lower on the computer, usually below the 50 percent level, and use the stereo to adjust the volume.
