CHIP provides
health coverage for children only.
Children's Health Insurance Program, or CHIP, provides low-income children with no health care access to low-cost or free health care coverage. The program covers doctor's office visits, prescription drugs, eye exams and other medical-related health services. CHIP coverage is offered across the United States with eligibility determined at the state level. The income limits for CHIP will vary from state to state based on the income thresholds and cost of living in each state.
Instructions
1. Verify the age of each child applying. Your children must be 19 years of age or younger to apply for CHIP.
2. Calculate your household income. The income for your household must be less than $44,100 for a family of four in most cases. However, the income limit will vary based on the state you live in, the number of children in the household and the total number of individuals living in the home.
3. Check the citizenship status of each child. Children must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents to qualify for CHIP.
4. Verify that the child does not have any other insurance coverage. Insurance provided through an employer or through Medicaid disqualifies children from the CHIP program.
