According to the American Pregnancy Association, between 50 and 70 percent of women experience back pain during pregnancy. Back pain can occur as one of the very first symptoms of pregnancy and last through the third trimester. There are many safe ways to treat and prevent back pain which will not cause any harm to an unborn baby. Making a few simple changes can help provide relief from back pain and keep a pregnant mother as comfortable as possible as she waits for her baby to arrive.

1. Use an ice pack or a heating pad to help relieve back pain. You can apply ice or heat to your back at any time of the day to provide relief. Experiment to see whether ice or heat works best for you. You can also try taking a hot bath or using a massaging shower head to relieve back pain.
2. Wear a back support brace. You can purchase a back support brace at most sports stores and many women report significant pain relief when wearing a back brace regularly. You can also buy special maternity pants that have a supportive waist band. These pants are available at many maternity clothing stores and some women find them easier to wear than a back brace.
3. Sleep on your left side only and try placing a small pillow between your knees and one underneath your stomach for added support. Some women use a full-body pillow at night to support their back as well. Avoid sleeping flat on your back at night, which can strain back muscles and leave you feeling sore the next day.
4. Use a chiropractor, massage therapist or acupuncturist who specializes in prenatal care. The Mayo Clinic suggests talking to your doctor about back pain before considering these kinds of alternative treatments. Chiropractic therapy, massage therapy and acupuncture are believed to be safe during pregnancy and might provide relief for some women, according to the Mayo Clinic. Sometimes, an at-home massage can provide relief as well.
5. Talk to your doctor about taking anti-inflammatory medication. According to the Mayo Clinic, Tylenol is safe for pregnant women to take, but Advil and Motrin are not. It is best to use medication only as a last resort and be sure to check with your doctor before taking any medications during pregnancy.
