Play A Bongo Cajon Drum

A bongo cajon drum can be a good addition to any band

Cajon drums have origins in West and Central Africa, where they were developed by slaves in the 1800s. The original cajons were constructed using shipping crates or dresser drawers. Today, the cajon drum has evolved in type and style. All are made from wood. One type of cajon drum that is popular today is the bongo cajon. It produces a sharp, hollow sound and makes a good addition to any band's percussion section. Learning the bongo cajon is a simple task, especially for anyone with percussion experience.

Instructions

1. Sit upright in a chair. It's easiest to play the bongo cajon while sitting.

2. Find the most comfortable position. There are two that work for playing the cajon bongo. Some place the bongo in between their legs, while others place it in their lap. Experiment with both until you find which is most comfortable.

3. Open your palms and hit the drum with a smacking motion. Depending on whether you hit the drum with your palms or fingers, different affects can be achieved. Lift your hands away with each hit. Holding them down prevents the instrument from resonating well.

4. Experiment with different rhythms and beats. The bongo cajon is an instrument that anyone with basic rhythm can achieve instant success in playing. Hit different parts of the surface to hear different pitches. To achieve different dynamics, hit lightly for a softer sound and harder for a louder one.
