Shower After Shoulder Surgery

The period after shoulder surgery is one of immobility and difficulty. How much you need both hands and arms becomes readily apparent as you try to do the simplest things, such as showering. You need to make sure you don't overexert your shoulder while it heals, or you will risk re-injuring or permanently damaging it. You should not shower immediately after shoulder surgery, and you should shower with care when your doctor clears you to do so.

Instructions

Shower After Shoulder Surgery

1. Take sponge baths for the first 72 hours after shoulder surgery. This is to make sure the incision has time to heal properly.

2. Once you are cleared to shower, remove your sling with your good arm.

3. Remove your clothing from the good arm first, and then use your good arm to get your clothing off of the recovering shoulder.

4. Place a bandage over the incision site and wrap it in a plastic bag, taping it securely around the edges. It is important to keep the incision dry until your surgeon gives you the all clear. If it does become wet, remove the dressing and replace it with dry bandages. You will not need to cover the incision once the sutures are removed.

5. Use your good arm for all activities, including turning the water on and lathering.

6. Keep your recovering arm at your side and move it as little as possible.

7. Request help from a family member if you need it.
