A PCI Express Wireless Internet Card connects to the Internet through a phone carrier.
If you travel a lot with a laptop, you've probably run into a situation where you've required wireless Internet but were unable to find a hot spot that would allow you to connect to the Internet. Fortunately, there is a way to work around this and effectively turn your laptop into its own wireless router. While you can't get wireless access anywhere in the world, you are able to get access to anywhere there is a phone signal.
Instructions
1. Purchase a PCI WiFi card through your service carrier. Your service carrier will likely charge you a monthly fee in order to keep the WiFi card active.
2. Install your PCI WiFi card by first removing the protective cover of your PCI Express Slot, usually located on the side or bottom of the laptop. Consult your laptop's manual in order to find out exactly where it is.
3. Put the PCI WiFi card in the open slot. When it connects, a light will blink on.
4. Open your wireless Internet connection by right-clicking on the wireless icon in the bottom right-hand corner of your desktop. This will open a drop-down menu.
5. Click "Enable." This will enable your wireless connection. You will be able to get Internet service anywhere there is cellphone service through your service provider.
