Graduate schools use management aptitude tests to help determine who to admit to MBA programs.
Management aptitude tests (MAT) are used by universities and businesses to determine which candidates are best prepared for a career in management. The most commonly-used MAT is the graduate management aptitude test (GMAT), which is used by business schools to help determine admission to MBA programs. Some large companies also use MATs to determine who to promote to management positions. They may also use MATs in the initial hiring process. The information here will apply to all types of MAT.
Instructions
1. Start preparing early --- do not wait until the week before the test. The GMAT company suggests you start studying at least four weeks before the exam date.
2. Learn about the format of the exam and what it will test. Most MATs test several different areas of knowledge, such as numerical aptitude, verbal aptitude, abstract reasoning, spatial ability, problem solving, data sufficiency and technical ability. Some tests may also test clerical ability or mechanical reasoning skills.
3. Take practice tests. There are many practice MATs available online. The GMAT website (see Resources) has sample questions and test-preparation software available using the GMAT format. Sample questions for the GMAT and other types of MAT are also available in books, such as "The Official Guide for GMAT Review." Make sure you review all of the topics covered in the exam. For example, you should review basic arithmetic, elementary algebra and basic geometry for quantitative questions and practice reading comprehension, grammar and critical reasoning for the verbal aptitude sections.
4. Practice writing timed essays. Most MATs include a section on analytical writing. Use online topic lists (see Resources) to get an idea of topic areas covered and sit down and practice writing timed analytical essays on some sample topics.
5. Take an MAT test preparation course. There are many commercial courses available that will teach you techniques, skills and abilities that are commonly tested for in MATs. Check online or with your local community college for a test preparation course near you.
