Train To Become A Weight Loss Counselor

Weight loss counselors help people change diet and exercise routines.

With obesity recognized as an increasing epidemic in the United States, the opportunities for weight loss counselors are better than ever before. The BestDietforMe website indicates that there are around 15,000 weight loss counselors in America as of 2010, but this number doesn't include those who work online. Because managing someone's weight directly affects that person's health, you should train professionally to be a weight loss counselor. This will take both physical and mental dedication.

Instructions

1. Take courses in nutrition, personal training, exercise physiology, fitness and physical therapy. Many community colleges and universities offer courses that cover these subjects. They also are available from weight loss companies that offer certification programs. Certification is not required for weight loss counselors as of 2010, but if you are planning to get certified so you can look more professional, you may have an easier time taking courses through your certifying organization. Both in-class and online options are available.

2. Lose weight and get fit yourself. Your appearance demonstrates to clients whether you have been able to apply your knowledge and techniques successfully. You don't necessarily need to look like a bodybuilder, but the better you look, the more seriously clients probably will take your weight loss advice.

3. Obtain certification as a weight loss counselor. Major organizations that provide weight loss training and certification are the National Association of Weight Management Counselors, the American Council on Exercise, Weight Watchers, the American Fitness Professionals and Associates and The Cooper Institute. Usually, to become certified, you must have a specified number of training hours (varies by organization) and pass a written exam.

4. Look for an entry-level job as a weight loss counselor in a gym or with a major weight loss company. Large weight loss companies are better options according to the BestDietforMe website because they can afford to invest more in their counselors. Network through these companies to gain a client base, and then, if desired, start your own business with your recent experience on your resume.
