Make A Hip Hop Beat In Fruity

Make your own Hip Hop beats with FL Studio.

What we know as a "hip hop" beat today originates from 1960s Rhythm & Blues music. During the breaks between portions of songs, R&B drummers would fill the space with a syncopated drum pattern. Because the pattern was played during the break, it was called a break beat. The break beat became the foundation of hip hop in the early 1980s. Programming a standard break beat into FL Studio (or Fruity Loops) is easy with the provided step sequencer and piano roll functions.

Instructions

1. Open Fruity Loops and create a new track by selecting "File" and "New Track." Apply the virtual drum synth of your choice. Open the piano roll by selecting "View" and "Piano Roll." The piano roll is segmented into sixteen blocks each representing one sixteenth of a full measure.

2. Program the kick drum by clicking on the pitch key associated with the kick drum. To add notes to the piano roll, double that pitch within the piano roll. Within a measure, place the kick drum at the first, eleventh and fifteenth beat.

3. Program the snare by clicking on the pitch key associated with the snare drum. Within a measure, double click the snare drum at the fifth and thirteenth beats.

4. Program the closed-hi-hat by clicking on the pitch key associated with the closed-hi-hat drum. Within a measure, double click the closed-hi-hat drum at the third through sixteenth beats.

5. Program the open-hi-hat by clicking on the pitch key associated with the open-hi-hat drum. Within a measure, double click the open-hi-hat drum at the first beat.
