An example of a crocheted blanket.
Crocheting a blanket isn't necessarily difficult, but it is probably one of the most time-consuming crochet projects out there. So be sure to plan ahead if you are making the blanket as a gift.
Instructions
Crocheting a blanket
1. Different yarn will yield different gauges.
Measure the length and width of the piece of furniture for which you are making the blanket. Find a pattern that approximates those measurements or, if you are learning crochet, use only one or two types of stitches for the whole blanket. If you are using a pattern, it will likely recommend a particular yarn and needle for sizing purposes, showing you how many stitches per inch is recommended for the pattern. If you want to use a different yarn, experiment with different needles until you reach the intended gauge. If you aren't using a pattern, do a few practice stitches to determine how many to chain to make the width of the project.
2. Change yarn colors at the beginning of a new row.
Chain the appropriate number and begin your blanket. Remember to maintain a steady level of tension and to check your work often. A good rule of thumb is to pull each loop around the thickest part of the needle, just below the hook, to ensure each loop is the same size. This is particularly important if you chain at the beginning of a new row, or if you are working on a lacy pattern that requires a chain stitch. If you need to change colors at any point, be sure to add them at the beginning of rows, or to follow the pattern accordingly.
3. You'll be proud of your finished product.
Weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle when you are done with the blanket and add any embellishing touches your pattern calls for, like fringe or beads. If this is your first blanket and are unsure of the shape, you may want to work a single crochet around the exterior as a border. Use the dominant color in the blanket and weave in loose ends when you're done. In some cases, you may want to steam the blanket or lay it flat for some time before folding it to ensure it retains its shape.
