Prepare For A Laparoscopy

Prepare for a Laparoscopy

A laparoscopy is a form of exploratory surgery that allows your doctor to examine your pelvic organs--your uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes. Undergoing surgery is never pleasant, but you can lessen your anxiety and reduce some of the unpleasantness if you follow these steps in preparation.

Instructions

1. Prepare the home front. If you live alone, stock your refrigerator with healthy foods that are easy to prepare. Clean your house and change the sheets.

2. Stock up. Have an over-the-counter painkiller and clean towels. Buy some magazines, books or DVDs for entertainment. Have a few outfits that aren't snug, especially in the stomach area. You may also want to buy some throat lozenges, because you might come home with a sore throat from the tube that was inserted in your throat.

3. Make arrangements for child care, dog walking and anything else that you might not be able to handle right away.

4. Eat lightly and drink a lot of fluids on the day before the surgery. Don't eat anything after midnight, or for 12 hours before the scheduled surgery.

5. Follow your doctor's instructions regarding an enema or full bowel prep.

6. Pack a suitcase with a comfortable outfit to wear after the surgery. Bring socks to keep your feet warm. Leave your valuables at home.

7. Remove your dentures or removable bridges, contact lenses and jewelery. Don't wear perfume, makeup or deodorant on the day of surgery.

8. Schedule a ride home from the hospital.

9. Arrive at the hospital on time or a little early on the day of surgery. You will be asked to fill out some paperwork. Discuss any concerns you might have with your anesthesiologist.
