Manage a Band


Managing a band isn't the easiest; but it's rewarding to make contacts and become visible in the music industry. If you think you have the business sense and communication skills to lead a band to success, then managing a group could be the job for you.

Know the Requirements


1. Network and expect to make and keep lots of contacts in the music industry.


2. Know that a band manager needs to communicate well with the members of the band.


3. Keep the band's goals in mind. You can't be afraid to remind them of what future goals they're working towards.


4. Expect to hone your business sense. As a band manager, you will need to make key decisions to support the band.

5. Find a band that you're interested in managing. Research their background and their previous gigs.


6. Go see the band perform. Note their lyrics and professionalism, as well as their stage performance.


7. Go to a performance held three months after the first. Compare the band to their past performance, and if they seem like they have improved, you may be interested in pursuing management further.


8. Contact the band. You can call their contact number listed on their website or approach them and request a press release.


9. Watch a third show and then meet the band afterwards.


10. Ask if the band already has a manager. If they don't have one, you can offer your services and suggest pointers to develop a strong live performance.


11. Set up a meeting with the band. This can be at your home, office or at their studio.


12. Describe specific areas in which you think the band could improve. Be sure to bring notes to corroborate your claims.


13. Ask the band if they are interested in your assistance.


14. Make it a point to attend more performances and note suggestions for the band. Continue to present your findings to develop a strong relationship with them.


15. Continue to counsel the artists. As your comments are noted and suggestions are acted upon, you'll gain a management position with the band.
