Prepare For Radiation Treatment

Radiation therapy is a treatment that attacks tumors and destroys cancer cells. It is often used in combination with chemotherapy to destroy any lingering cancer cells. It is very productive when dealing with tumors that are too small to remove through surgery such as bone or brain tumors. Generally, radiation therapy is not painful, but it is very time consuming. Taking small precautions to prepare yourself for treatment is a good way to ensure your well being.

Instructions

1. Attend your radiation simulation visit. Before your radiation treatment begins your doctor will most likely schedule a simulation visit. At this time your doctor determines the specific location that will be targeted on your body during treatment. In addition, the doctor will determine a comfortable position for you to remain in (without moving) during the process; this is important to ensure as little movement as possible.

2. Protect the area determined for radiation. Your doctor will most likely mark the bodily area in which you will be receiving treatment. This will help in targeting the same area each visit. Most commonly, treatment is undergone five days a week, so it is very important to protect the area of treatment since it will become sensitive. Avoid sun contact at your treatment area as well as scratching, tight clothing or friction of any kind.

3. Rest sufficiently. Although radiation therapy is not particularly painful it is very tiring, causing extreme fatigue. Make sure to get at least nine hours of sleep each night before treatment. In addition, allow yourself time to rest and recover after each treatment session. Sufficient rest is necessary to feel well through the treatment period.

4. Eat the proper diet, including plenty of carbohydrates and vegetables. You will need all the energy you can get, and eating properly will help you fight fatigue. Stay away from caffeine since it will only make you more tired in the long run. It is also very important during radiation therapy and a bout of cancer to keep your body in tip top working condition. Treatment will be much more successful in fighting cancerous property if your body is able to fight along with treatment.
