Process A Health Insurance Claim

It is very important to invest in health insurance because, after all, paying for medical bills out of pocket can cause a huge dent in your savings. So make sure you subscribe to a reputable health insurance company. Keep your health insurance card with you at all times. Before you can file a medical insurance claim, most insurance companies do have specific requirements for you to be hospitalized for 24 hours or more.

Preparation Process

1. Request a bill from your doctor's office so that you can check with your health insurance company if the claims are covered.

2. Go through your health insurance policy document to see if said treatment is covered. Some policies do have cashless hospitalization claims that you can take advantage of if your hospital visit was planned 2 to 3 days in advance or if it was an emergency.

3. In case of non-cashless benefit, ask the health insurer for a claim form. Fill it out properly and combine it with the itemized bill before sending it to the insurance company.

4. Make sure you keep copies of the medical bills, claim form, receipts and correspondence in case there is a claim dispute and the insurance is not honored.

5. Read about the limitations and exclusions of the insurance policy. There may be some diseases which may not be approved (e.g., existing illnesses).

6. Find out from the insurer how long it will take to get the insurance approved. If there is a delay, follow up with them.

7. If the claim is denied, contact the claims manager at the insurer's office and file an appeal.
