Transfer From A Bed To A Chair

A transfer from a bed to a chair is performed independently or with caregiver assistance depending on if the person has a low or high level of mobility. This technique requires some practice, but knowing the necessary actions for a safe transfer from a bed to a chair can increase self-reliance and decrease the risk of an injury.

Instructions

Caregiver Assisted Transfer

1. Assist the person to sit on the side of the bed with his feet resting flat on the floor. Place shoes with non-skid soles on the person's feet.

2. Position the chair on the person's stronger side at a 45 degree angle to the bed. Lock the wheels and move the footrests out of the way if using a wheelchair. Assemble a gait belt, if available, around the person's waist.

3. Grasp each side of the gait belt with an underhand grip or, if not using a gait belt, place your hands on each side of the person's torso just under his armpits. You can also wrap your arms around his torso and clasp your hands behind his back.

4. Instruct the person to grasp your shoulders for support to give him leverage when rising. Support the leg farthest from the chair with your legs.

5. Rock the person to a standing position at an agreed upon cue. Use good body mechanics to prevent injury.

6. Pivot the person until his back is to the chair. Assist the person to step back until he feels the chair at the back of his legs.

7. Instruct the person to grab the arms of the chair or, if using a wheelchair, the armrests.

8. Assist the person to lower himself into the chair. Assist the person to a comfortable position, and remove the gait belt.

Independent Transfer

9. Sit on the side of the bed with your feet flat on the floor. Put non-skid shoes on your feet.

10. Position the chair on your stronger side so that the arm of the chair is parallel to the bed.

11. Push down on the mattress with your palms, and lift yourself into a standing position.

12. Grasp the farthest chair arm with your stronger hand.

13. Twist your body to grasp the other chair arm with your weaker hand.

14. Back up until you feel the seat against the back of your legs.

15. Lower yourself into the chair and position yourself comfortably.
