Get Signed To A Music Label

Do more than send out demos to get signed to a label.

It's a dream for many musicians to get signed to a music label, which serves as a big step toward "making it" in the industry. While some artists still get signed to music labels by sending in demos, more often than not artists need to establish themselves first in order to gain the attention of most music labels. You can get signed to a music label by creating a marketable sound, building a reputation and getting in touch with industry executives.

Instructions

1. Craft a unique image and sound for your band, while still following time-tested song formulas and meeting the expectations of artists in your genre. For example, if you're in a heavy metal band, establish a sound unlike other metal bands, perhaps by incorporating jazz styles, but continue to follow the conventions of metal, such as distorted guitar and fast drumming.

2. Build up a fanbase on your own. Release your own music, tour constantly and promote in every market possible. In order to get signed to most music labels, you'll need to show that you're already willing to do the footwork to make it as an artist.

3. Network with people in the music industry, including everyone from radio DJs to sound engineers at your shows. Anybody can open a door for you. For example, a member of a fellow band might be able to get your demo into the hands of a music label owner.

4. Create an attractive press kit to market your band to music labels. Include an artist biography, press clippings and cover letter stating your intent to get signed-also include a demo of your three best songs.

5. Hire a lawyer and/or build a relationship with a respected music producer. Have them contact music labels for you. Music labels are more likely to sign you if you have professional backing.
