Prevent Osteolysis Of The Total Hip

Exercise should be moderate to prevent osteolysis.


Osteolysis refers to the weakening or deterioration of the bone as a result of a total hip-replacement procedure. The metal head of the hip stem rubs against the polyethylene cup in the hip socket resulting in wear and tear. Small particles break off into the body, provoking the body's immune system to fight the foreign debris as if it were an infection. The immune system might start eating away the bone surrounding the implant as a result. Osteolysis is one of the biggest causes of hip implant failure. The condition of the implant could depend on the lifestyle of the individual.


Instructions


1. Look for signs and symptoms of osteolysis and seek treatment and medication from your doctor if necessary to reduce pain and treat the condition. Symptoms might include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and upset stomach and muscle pain. Some medicines might include biphosphonates, which generates new bone cells faster; steroids can reduce joint pain and swelling.


2. Make regular appointments with your doctor to receive regular X-rays and tests to check the bones and implants.


3. Take vitamin D supplements if your osteolysis is caused by cancer. This will prevent the bones from further weakening.


4. Change your diet. A healthy diet could prevent osteolysis and reduce pain associated with hip replacements. For example, some total hip-replacement patients report that pain is more intense when there is more weight for the body to carry. If you are obese or overweight, your body weight will add to the pressure and weaken your bones.


5. Avoid activities that require you to stand or carry heavy items. This could have an adverse impact on the bone.


6. Exercise, but don't overextend yourself. Excessive and high-impact exercise, such as running, should be avoided as they could increase your chances that bones will weaken and break. Try moderate activities such as walking briskly. Talk to your doctor and decide on a list of exercises that you can safely do without causing injury.
