As greater numbers of women begin to breastfeed, there is a greater demand for breast pumps. However, some mothers who choose to nurse cannot afford to purchase a breast pump. For such women, renting a breast pump is the best option. It is very important to have a proper rental agreement prepared whenever you rent out a breast pump.
Instructions
1. Decide on the rental length and cost. Since women breastfeed for varying lengths of time, a rental period of one month is ideal. You may also offer weekly or bimonthly rentals if you choose to do so. Always specify a minimum rental period. Your contract should state whether you will prorate rental periods, that is, refund money for days not used if the renter returns the pump early. List the specific starting and ending dates for each rental period to avoid confusion.
2. Set your pricing. Check rental prices at other companies near you, as prices will vary by area. Generally, a monthly rental of $50 to $60 will be competitive. Set a price for a deposit, if you plan to require one. Again, this price will vary by area, but $100 to $200 is not unreasonable. Your contract should state how you will refund the deposit upon rental return, such as by cash, check, or credit to a credit card. Include what you will charge from the deposit if there is damage to the pump or parts are missing when the renter returns it.
3. Specify what is included in the rental. This should be only the breast pump itself, as milk collection kits (flanges, tubing, diaphragm and bottles) are only for use by one woman, due to health and hygiene concerns. If the AC adaptor unplugs from the pump or if you include a car adaptor or carrying case, list those items separately in the contract. For example: "One (1) Medela breast pump model 123XYZ with one (1) AC adaptor and one (1) black carrying case."
4. Specify what is not included. Your renter must purchase her own collection kit, so your contract should state that a kit does not come with the pump. Include a section that the renter must initial to consent or decline to purchase a kit from you if you plan to sell them. This section should also mention the cost of a kit, which is usually around $40 to $50, and the fact that the kit is non-refundable in part or in whole, and that you will give no exchanges except in case of defect.
5. Have the renter sign and date the contract. Provide a copy of your rental agreement to the renter.
