Bleaching or continuously dying your hair could create undesired effects. Bleaching or dying your hair at home can create an orange or brassy color to your hair. This may be an unflattering look. Removing the orange tint can be difficult. Using a toner on your hair will get rid of that brassy, orange color. Does this Spark an idea?
Instructions
1. Brush your hair. If your hair is extremely grimy or dirty, you will need to shampoo, condition and dry it before you begin getting the orange out. Use a purple-tinted shampoo and conditioner to help tone down the brassy color. If you don't have a purple-tinted set, regular shampoo and conditioner will suffice. Only apply the conditioner to areas that do not have the orange, brassy color.
2. Shake the bottle of toner well. A toner will greatly reduce the brassy color in your hair. Look for a purple-tinted toner in a beauty supply store. The purple tint will combat the orange color. There are other toners available, but a purple-tinted toner will be the only one that will reduce the brassy color in your hair. Any brand of purple tinted toner should work.
3. Do a quick strand test before applying the toner all over your head. Saturate a strand of orange hair with the toner. Allow it to set for the specified time, usually 30 minutes. Be sure to follow the directions on the bottle though. Wash out the toner and dry your strand of hair. Look for results. If it looks good, prepare to apply the toner to the rest of your hair.
4. Saturate your hair with toner. Squirt small amounts of toner on the brassy areas in your hair. Pull out the section of hair and move up and down the hair squeezing the bottle of toner. After you have applied the toner to all the brassy areas in your hair, work it in using your hands, almost like you are washing your hair. Allow it to set for however long the directions call for. This is usually about 30 minutes. Wrap a towel around your shoulders to help catch drips.
5. Wash and lightly condition your hair when it's time. Dry your hair and comb it. The orange in your hair should be gone, or greatly reduced. If not, repeat the process until you reach your desired color.
