Get Internet Without Phone Lines

You don't need a fixed land line to connect to the Internet.

If you don't have, can't get or don't want a fixed-line telephone service in your home, there are still a number of ways you can connect to the Internet using a range of equipment from your property or when you're out and about. In some cases, you can even get a faster service than you would through a land line broadband connection.

Instructions

Cable

1. Contact a cable service provider to see if they provide coverage in your area. Cable providers supply phone, Internet and television services through hardwired cable networks under the ground.

2. Choose a package that's right for you and arrange for an engineer to come and install your equipment. In some circumstances, you may be able to install the hardware yourself, depending on the company you choose and your personal circumstances.

3. Connect your computer to your cable modem and follow the instructions supplied by your cable broadband provider to get online.

Dongle

4. Contact your cell phone provider to inquire whether they can add a wireless dongle to your call package. If they don't provide this service, shop around for an alternative. You can buy pay-as-you-go deals or packages with inclusive fixed data plans.

5. Order your dongle package. If you use a lot of data, you'll likely be better off buying a generous data plan package.

6. Follow the instructions that come with your dongle to get online.

Public Wi-Fi

7. Find a local bar or cafe that offers free Wi-Fi access.

8. Visit your chosen establishment and click on the Wi-Fi symbol in your computer's system tray.

9. Locate the free connection and follow the instructions to get online. You may need to make a purchase to receive a free code for access.
