Tell if You Have a Hernia


A hernia is a painful swelling, usually in the abdominal region. However, it can be found in other parts of the body as well. If you believe you have a hernia but you are not completely sure, there are certain signs that you need to be aware of. A mild hernia may not cause any problems; nevertheless, a health care professional should look at intense pain and discomfort.

1. Look for swelling or a lump around your abdominal region. You may notice a bulge around your stomach that you can push on. A hernia is usually located around the abdominal or groin areas. However, other parts of the body may experience this type of injury as well.


2. Feeling sick is another way to tell if you have a hernia. This condition can cause an upset stomach that may lead to vomiting. You also may feel nausea without actually vomiting.


3. Localized pain can be another symptom of a hernia. This may be light discomfort or agonizing pain. Sometimes, the area where the hernia is may not show any signs except for uncomfortable pain around the area. You can experience discomfort over the area where the hernia is developing or you may find a larger area is painful. Hernias can also be present with no pain.


4. Heartburn and excess belching or burping is another sign of a hernia. Heartburn associated with a hiatal hernia can be stubborn and very painful; it may occur with a meal or on an empty stomach.
