Recording a mix to a Laptop is a great way for aspiring DJs to showcase their skills. Once a mix is saved on your laptop you can compress the file to an MPS and burn CDs to send to clubs and other prospective employers. To record a mix on your laptop set up you decks, mixer and amp as normal. The only difference is an RCA cable connecting your mixer to the laptop.
Instructions
1. Download or buy audio editing software for your computer. Audacity is a free, open source audio-editing software available online. Adobe also does audio editing software and you can even use the audio function on Windows Movie Maker if necessary.
2. Connect your mixer and laptop using an RCA cable. The end with two plugs is inserted into the "Booth Output" ports on the back of your mixer, red and white plugs going into their respective color-coded sockets. The single plug end of the RCA cable is inserted into the "Line In" port on your laptop.
3. Boot up your laptop. Open the "Start" menu and select "Volume Control". Click on "Options" then "Properties" and "Recording" on the subsequent menus that appear. Finally, check the box at the bottom of the "Line In" column on the pop-up audio control screen.
4. Load up your audio recording software. Press the "Record" button - on Adobe and Audacity this is a red button with an R - and begin recording your DJ mix.
