Repair A Cracked Monitor On A Laptop

You can fix a broken laptop screen by replacing the LCD panel.

The only way to fix a cracked monitor on a laptop computer is to replace the LCD screen. Other problems with a laptop's display, such as dimness or excessive flickering, might be mended by replacing the display unit's backlight or inverter board, but the only way you can salvage a cracked screen is by taking it apart and inserting a new LCD panel. Before you order a new screen, refer to your product documentation or visit the manufacturer's website for the LCD panel's spare part number.

Instructions

1. Switch off the laptop and unplug its power cord. Take off the battery by undoing the cover under the laptop and raising the battery from its dock. Never attempt to dismantle electronic components with a power source.

2. Locate and remove screws from the bezel---the plastic frame bordering the LCD panel. Refer to the manual for exact locations of the screws and undo each one. You might have to pry loose small rubber seals with a sharp-tipped object to expose the screws underneath.

3. Separate the LCD panel from the bezel. With all screws removed, place a small flat implement, such as a guitar pick, between the plastic frame and the glass surface of the screen to dislodge the cracked LCD panel from the frame. Twist the pick with one hand to loosen the frame, and with your other hand, gently pull the frame away from the screen. Loosen the frame from all four sides and remove it completely.

4. Pull the cracked screen toward you by tilting it forward. Locate two cables attaching the back of the LCD panel to the laptop. Maneuver the thin metal frame surrounding the LCD panel to access the cables. Remove the sticky tape holding the ribbon-like video cable in place, and unplug the cable from the LCD screen. Next, unplug the screen's power cord attached to a small green board known as the inverter.

5. Take the screen out. Once you unplug the cables, you may slide the screen out of its place and install the new one. Refer to your documentation for instructions on remove the LCD screen. Be wary of the cracks in the old screen when you handle it. Bring the replacement screen close to the frame, orientate it accordingly, and slide it in the same way.

6. Reattach the video and the power cables. Gently tilt the new screen toward you, plug in the cables and then rest it upright against the shell of the display assembly. Make sure that you plug the cables in firmly. You will have to take apart the display assembly again if there are loose connections.

7. Reattach the bezel to hold the screen in place. Place the plastic frame gently over the LCD panel, and align the borders before screwing the bezel back on. Put in the screws with one hand and use the other for support from the back. Check assembly by opening and closing the laptop's lid a few times. Turn on the computer.
