Getting signed
to a label often takes time and hard work.
Getting signed to a recording label is a dream for many bands. Sometimes accomplishing this dream can be so challenging that it seems nearly impossible. However, there are techniques and strategies that you can implement which can greatly increase your band's chances of signing a contract with a label. Even though the musical competition is stiff, you can still take steps to get your group noticed and on track toward this significant musical accomplishment.
Instructions
1. Create a demo recording featuring three to five of your best songs. Select songs that highlight your strengths as a band. Use a variety of songs ranging from fast to slow or upbeat to serious in order to show your musical flexibility and range.
2. Hire a professional photographer to take some pictures of your group. Include these pictures, along with a brief biography and description, in an informational packet. Keep these packets on hand so that you can distribute them readily to recording labels, radio stations and other individuals in the music business.
3. Research record labels to find which ones best suit the type of music that you play. Check out websites like All Record Labels (see Resources) to research companies based on the musical genre they prefer.
4. Contact record labels by phone or by email and find out their method for sending in material. Each label can be different about how they require artists to submit material. Send your demo and information packet to multiple labels, especially independent ones. If you've never had a recording contract before, it may be easier to get started with an independent label that is more likely to take a chance on new artists.
5. Create a name for yourself. Play in public every chance you get. Network with people and build your fan base. Record companies are more likely to hire bands who already have a following of fans.
6. Hire an attorney to help you to sift through paperwork and legal issues if a label makes you an offer.
