Limousine drivers train either on-the-job or through independent training programs. Although limousine companies accept job applications from anyone with a clean driving record, inexperienced chauffeurs can become more appealing applicants through completion of a limo driver training course. The primary purpose of this training is to familiarize new chauffeurs with the etiquette and expectations of the profession. However, some driving techniques are also taught.
Instructions
Before You Apply
1. Assess the local job market by reading the classifieds or calling limousine companies to see if there are openings for chauffeurs in your area.
2. Contact your state transportation agency to find out the requirements for limousine drivers. Determine if you meet the minimum requirements and request any forms needed to apply.
3. If necessary, apply for the license or permit required to operate a limousine in your area. You may need to complete a course of training before you can receive your license. You may also be required to take a written and/or driving test.
4. Research independent training programs to see which in-person or online training program works best for you. Consider cost, time to complete, and the quality of the program in your decision. If you are participating in on-the-job training, you may wish to skip this step.
Preparing for Training
5. Purchase a chauffeur's uniform -- typically a dark suit with white shirt and tie. An employer can also direct you to the appropriate attire.
6. Purchase a limo driver kit: products for cleaning the inside and outside of a car, a briefcase, pens, paper, and maps of your area.
7. Master local transportation. Study maps of your area and know get to major destinations such as airports, conference centers, tourist spots, and upscale hotels.
8. Enter your chosen chauffeur training program. Strive to be as professional with your trainers as you will be with your future passengers.
9. If you have not already been hired, apply for jobs. Update your resume to show that you have completed an independent training course for limo drivers.
